A while ago I stumbled upon Soapnuts. I had never actually knew that anything like this actually existed! The idea is brilliant, but I wondered just how well they actually work?? Do they actually get your clothes (or other things) clean? I was so excited when Stacey over at Maggies Pure Land offered me a chance to try out a 12ct bag of their soapnuts and a 64oz jug of their Lavendar Tea Tree liquid soap nuts.
When I got the package in the mail I was so excited to try them out. Soap nuts are a completely renewable, environmentally friendly, biodegradable material, that can be put into your compost once they are used! So you don't have any huge plastic laundry soap containers to throw away after you are done with them (and if you are using the liquid soap nuts you can just re-use the container when you make more soap nuts liquid instead of throwing it away). All you have left after using them are the empty shells from the soap nuts that will decompose.
Soapnuts are a highly effective way of cleaning, yet gentle at the same time. If you or your little one have super sensitive skin, these will work great for washing clothes or using for a cleaning substance around your house. Soapnuts leave your laundry incredibly soft, fresh, and clean compared to other detergents. You get all of this without having to use laundry soap/household cleaners that are full of chemicals, dyes, and other nasty stuff that is added to cleaners and detergents. The mildness of soap nuts keep the colors bright on your laundry and help maintain your fabric for a long period of time. The soap nuts can be used for any temperature of laundry water, although the saponin in the nuts (soap) is released best in warm water initially.
My first time trying out the liquid soap nuts I used them to wash stinky stinky cloth diapers. I put 2 Tbsp of liquid soapnuts (or 5 soap nuts that are cracked open and placed in the provided sack) in the washer with my laundry and let it do its job. After they were done the diapers came out perfectly clean, no stains, no stinks. Since I have used the liquid for general laundry, towels, and household cleaning and it has worked great for everything that we tried. The regular soap nuts lasted for 3+ loads of laundry without having to replace them. You can re-use then until all of the Saponin (soap) is gone out of them.
Another thing that I love about the soap nuts is that it takes the stink out of clothes that get left in the washer too long......and we all know that happens more than we want to admit. I had a load of stinky towels that I had washed who knows how many times with regular detergent and the stink WOULD NOT come out. One wash cycle with the soap nuts and all of the stink was gone and they were perfectly clean!
